Most office plants don't die from neglect. They die from being the wrong plant in the wrong corner. Walk your space at 10am and again at 3pm and notice where the light actually lands before you buy anything.
What 'low light' really means
Low light isn't no light. It's roughly 50–150 foot-candles: a spot where you could read a paperback comfortably but wouldn't want to do detail work. If your phone camera has to brighten the image, it's below what any plant tolerates long term.
The shortlist
- ZZ plant — the toughest thing in the catalog, water every 3–4 weeks.
- Snake plant — vertical lines that read architectural.
- Cast iron plant — deep green, slow, unbothered by cold lobbies.
- Pothos — trails from shelves and cabinet tops, forgives missed weeks.
- Chinese evergreen — silver to blush variegation in genuinely low light.
- Philodendron 'Birkin' — glossy and soft in filtered office light.
- Peace lily — droops before it's in trouble, a great early-warning plant.
The right plant in the right light needs care every other week. The wrong plant needs a replacement every quarter.
Frequently asked
- What is the easiest office plant for a windowless room?
- A ZZ plant. It tolerates the lowest light of any common interior plant. In a truly windowless room, add a full-spectrum LED on a timer.
- How often should office plants be watered?
- Most low-light office plants need water every 10–21 days. Check the top two inches of soil rather than following a fixed calendar.
