Growing Pothos in Water Forever: No Soil, No Repotting, No Mess

Pothos is the rare houseplant that doesn't just tolerate water culture — it thrives in it. Kept in a clean glass vessel with the right routine, a single cutting will trail for years without ever touching soil.

Why water culture works for pothos

Pothos roots adapt to whichever medium they start in. Water roots are thinner and whiter than soil roots, built to pull oxygen directly from the water. As long as the water stays fresh and oxygenated, the plant has everything it needs.

Choosing the vessel

• Clear glass so you can watch root health and water clarity at a glance.
• A narrow neck to hold stems upright without crowding the roots.
• Enough volume that the water doesn't evaporate down in a few days.
• Amber or smoked glass if the jar sits in bright light — it slows algae.

The maintenance rhythm

• Change the water every 7–10 days, or sooner if it turns cloudy.
• Rinse the roots gently under the tap when you change the water.
• Add a quarter-strength liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.
• Trim any mushy brown roots immediately — they spread fast.

Cloudy water is not a cosmetic problem. It's the first sign the roots are running out of oxygen.

Common mistakes

Topping off instead of replacing the water lets minerals and salts concentrate. Direct sun cooks the roots and feeds algae. And crowding a dozen cuttings into one jar starves them all. One or two stems per vessel, refreshed on schedule, will look better than any crowded arrangement.
